Abstract
Uncorrected refractive error – simply the need for an eye exam and a pair of glasses - is the number one cause of visual impairment globally.*
Optometry Giving Sight aims to mobilize resources from the global optical community and their patients to help the more than 600 million people in the world who are living as blind or vision impaired due to uncorrected refractive error. We are the only global fundraising initiative that specifically targets this issue.
Whether it’s funding the training of eye care professionals in Eritrea, the establishment of permanent vision centres in Sri Lanka, schools screenings in El Salvador or mobile clinics to reach disadvantaged children in the US, your donations ultimately mean that more people will gain access to quality eye care services. That means eye examinations and eye health assessments, access to affordable glasses and referral for further treatment for more complicated issues, such as cataracts.
We know while 80 percent of all global visual impairment is preventable, about 90 percent of the world's visually impaired people live in developing countries.*
The good news is that uncorrected refractive error is a solvable problem and you can help.
